Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

If you haven't read this book... WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! This is one of the best books I've read in... a very, very long time. I loved this book to bits and pieces and I couldn't sit and watch the opportunity to review it pass by! So, while the story is still fresh in my mind, here is my review.

Goodreads synopsis;

Ketterdam: a bustling hub of international trade where anything can be had for the right price—and no one knows that better than criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker. Kaz is offered a chance at a deadly heist that could make him rich beyond his wildest dreams. But he can't pull it off alone...

A convict with a thirst for revenge.

A sharpshooter who can't walk away from a wager.

A runaway with a privileged past.

A spy known as the Wraith.

A Heartrender using her magic to survive the slums.

A thief with a gift for unlikely escapes.

Kaz's crew are the only ones who might stand between the world and destruction—if they don't kill each other first.

I loved all of the characters. I mean all of them. They are not your typical "hero squad" walking in and saving the day. You know, with them being criminals and all. But as I began to read the first few pages, I couldn't help but falling in love with this (seemingly random) cast of characters. Yes, they are gamblers, thieves, crooks, and criminals, but they have more of a story to them. This perspective made me open my eyes and realize that not all criminals are just criminals. Yes, they do morally wrong things, but that doesn't make them incapable of feeling anything. Buuutttt... that also doesn't mean criminals shouldn't go to jail, or get what they deserve. I honestly really enjoyed reading from a different perspective, because I've never seen anything like this story in YA before. It was both refreshing and satisfying.

On the topic of characters... I feel the need to talk about the romances. Yes, there was sexual tension. Yes, ALL OF THE CHARACTERS NEEDED TO JUST SHUT UP AND KISS EACH OTHER. Inej and Kaz were, without a doubt, the cringiest of them all. Not because they were cheesy, at all. It was far from cheesy. But the sexual tension was just unbearable, and I couldn't even. They said all of the wrong things, and only thought the right things to say in those vulnerable moments. And then there's Matthias and Nina. OH MY FREAKING GOODNESS! I love these two. They are supposed to hate each other, and act as enemies would, but again, the sexual tension was there, straining against the pages. And lastly... my favorite, Wylan and Jesper. They were adorable, and I hope to actually see some form of sexual tension because that would be FANTASTIC OMG.

In terms of plot and pacing, I think this was one of the most imaginative and creative plots I've read. Ever. And the pacing was just golden. I felt like it was dragging, but it really wasn't. I was just too anxious to know what would happen next, that it would feel like the pacing was dragging. That's what helped make this such a rich, layered story. The agonizing wait of finding out what happens next had me practically pulling my hair out.

In the end, this book brought me out of an almost slump, and has me hooked on a new, refreshing story. And anticipating a new book.
