Goodreads Synopsis;

Elias and Laia are running for their lives. After the events of the Fourth Trial, Martial soldiers hunt the two fugitives as they flee the city of Serra and undertake a perilous journey through the heart of the Empire.

Laia is determined to break into Kauf—the Empire’s most secure and dangerous prison—to save her brother, who is the key to the Scholars’ survival. And Elias is determined to help Laia succeed, even if it means giving up his last chance at freedom.

But dark forces, human and otherworldly, work against Laia and Elias. The pair must fight every step of the way to outsmart their enemies: the bloodthirsty Emperor Marcus, the merciless Commandant, the sadistic Warden of Kauf, and, most heartbreaking of all, Helene—Elias’s former friend and the Empire’s newest Blood Shrike.

Bound to Marcus’s will, Helene faces a torturous mission of her own—one that might destroy her: find the traitor Elias Veturius and the Scholar slave who helped him escape…and kill them both.

I was actually kind of surprised by how quickly this book started off. I feel like it just swept me off my feet and dived headfirst into the story, without any time for me to react. It literally picked up right where AEITA left off. However fast-paced, I still loved it the same. It was action-packed and thoroughly enchanting bringing back all of the feels that came with the first book.

This sequel definitely incorporated more magic which was a nice surprise. AEITA had some fantasy elements, but I it was integrated into the more in this one. I also really enjoyed how we were introduced to the world more, geographically. It's been a while since I've read it, but I do remember it expanding on this world a lot more than the first book. The novel itself really took a darker turn, and I felt an unease towards a certain character who I will not name because I don't want to spoil you!! But, I was also kind of confused about some characters, some happenings, and some places. I feel that some characters and places should have been worked upon a little more to give us a better understanding of what was going on, but it was still enjoyable.

Okay, all I have to say for the characters is that Elias got hotter, Laia is cooler, Izzi is awesome, and more but spoilers so...

In the end, this story was not satisfying enough, and with the way it ended, I literally CANNOT WAIT for the third novel. The suspense is driving me crazy!!!

FINAL RATING~
4.5/5 stars

Thank you all so much for reading today's review. I hope you decide to pick up this continuing series because it's one of my favorites ever, and you MUST read it so we can discuss! Anywho, see you all in my next post!
