Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard Review and Booktalk

The minute I closed this book, I immediately picked up a piece of paper and started writing my review because I was HYPED. So, to honor my crazed brain, I am writing this review for you today.

#curentlyreading I JUST fini...#celineannajillmarch16 #curr...#socksunday #celineannajillm...

Goodreads Synopsis;  This is a world divided by blood – red or silver.

The Reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change.

That is, until she finds herself working in the Silver Palace. Here, surrounded by the people she hates the most, Mare discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power.

Fearful of Mare’s potential, the Silvers hide her in plain view, declaring her a long-lost Silver princess, now engaged to a Silver prince. Despite knowing that one misstep would mean her death, Mare works silently to help the Red Guard, a militant resistance group, and bring down the Silver regime.

But this is a world of betrayal and lies, and Mare has entered a dangerous dance – Reds against Silvers, prince against prince, and Mare against her own heart ...

Review;
Okay, in the beginning I felt it was light- hearted, action- packed, and fast- paced. I think that Mare was waaaaaayyyyyy more likable as a person in the beginning because of all of her hardships and the struggles she faced, while still trying to live for herself. I feel it was relate able to a certain extent. Don't get me wrong, her life sucks rotten fish balls, but I think that the way she handles her life is realistic to an extent.

In the mid- section of this book, it took a more serious and dark turn. When Mare discovers her powers, everything is chaotic and the story turns from light- hearted and fun, to a darker, more daunting world. With that being said, I feel that when Mare is introduced to this whole new lifestyle, with powers and what have you, there was a TON more world building, and some romances. Honestly, it felt like the Selection series all over again with the whole love triangle. In the Selection series, the whole story is meant to be cute and tropey, but this book was not meant to be like that. I feel like the love triangle was a bit unecessary, and quite frankly, obvious. I understand a bit of romance, but please, do not make it a melodramatic love triangle, and an obvious one at that.

In the end, all I can say is wow. The ending had my heart oozing with emotion, and I was pretty broken. When I finished this read, I wanted more of this world, and more of the story. There is so much to discover in this world, and I feel as if the first book barely even touches the surface of discovering what really lies beneath. So, if you've been putting this book aside for a while, pick it up NOW. This book will emotionally destroy you, but also give you hope. In the end all I can say, is that you're in for a treat with this captivating read.

Final Rating;
4.5/5 stars

If you have read the book, continue reading for my book talk. If not, BEWARE! The next portion of this review contains spoilers! If you haven't read the book, come back and read my book talk when you've finished!

Book Talk;
Okay. I have never done a discussion on this blog before, so I'm sorry if this turns out to be a wreck. Also, for those who are not aware, MY DISCUSSIONS ARE FOR THOSE WHO HAVE READ THE BOOKS SO IT DOES CONTAIN SPOILERS. With that said, welcome to my first book talk ever!

I had so much to say about the characters, but I didn't really want to say it in the review portion of this post, so I MUST TALK ABOUT IT NOW.

Okay, I think we can all agree that Kilorn and his brotherly status and affection (if not outright affection) is amazing. It is literally the best book friendship I've seen in a while. They tease each other, beat each other up (which is actually hilarious), and are the funniest pair, especially in the beginning, before Cal got her a job at the palace. Kilorn getting punched by Mare is like:

nostalgia childhood reading ya young adult

Speaking of Cal, he is perfection. HE IS MY POOR BROKEN SON AND I WILL PROTECT HIM. I mean, when he was torturing Farley, he was obviously not doing any good, but he is still perfection. And my precious Julian Jacos! I wish he was my teacher because he is literally AMAZING. I wish his character was explored more though. I mean, we saw a lot of him, but we didn't get to fully discover him as a character. I think it would make a very interesting (and sad) novella.

On the topic of sad... Maven. HOW AND WHY COULD HE DO THIS?!

why ugh annoyed joe jonas amas

He betrayed not only Cal and Mare in the worst possible ways. I honestly cannot physically talk about this because it kills me on the inside *cries*. He was so sweet and not to mention swoon- worthy, and then betrayed not only Cal and Mare, but the audience as well. And his mother is, for lack of a better term, a biatchy, evil, booty sucking, queen. My mother would yell at me if I swore, so instead, I'll say biatchy hehe.

In the ending there was also another plot twist, one that I think is overlooked because of thee bigger one. And that is SHADE BEING ALIVE. That was a really surprising turn of events, and his character is definitely explored more in the second book, which I am currently reading.

Final rating~
4.5/5 stars
